I have mixed feelings about Craig. On the positive, he is engaging and facilitates discussion/arguments in a way few professors do. You truly feel in his class you can say and argue anything you want on any issue from any perspective, which is wonderful. The problems come with his teaching style. He gives the distinct impression he's only reading some kind of wikipedia summary of the various IR theories. He prides himself on dressing in suits for class, yet they are comically oversized, to the point of hilarity; he dresses more like a clown than a professional. He will make extremely immature jokes in order to win the favor of the class. He will frequently talk about himself rather than the subject matter. His insecurities are simply so obvious it can disrupt the teaching environment and make you question his knowledge. He is a fair grader and if you do the work and participate, you will do well. I cannot recommend nor dismiss Craig. I would say take it if only for the interesting experience.

Craig is an interesting character. He likes to talk about himself often rather than focusing on the lectures, but that was the only down fall I could find in taking his class. For those who criticize Craig, you were probably just offended by something he said, or by the fact that many of his students relate to him in a way you would not understand. That’s just who Craig is, he is controversial and states that in the beginning of his classes. There is a work load expected and if you actually take the time to do the reading on your own and question it, then you gain useful knowledge. Craig questions the students more than force feed them facts, but you learn because he forces you to find the truth for yourself. Don’t get me wrong I am not part of the “Craig cult” but I also respect him for how he has positively changed my life.

Craig is not just a professor; he is a teacher in the true meaning of the term. He has taught me not just political science and philosophy, but inspired a search for Truth using reason and logic, which I now understand I had never really applied before. If you feel that you’re not lazy, but that you’re in college to really learn something, Craig is the man for you. Whether you want to understand political science or philosophy, or you want to find guidance and inspiration in your pursuit of Truth, any class of Craig’s is WELL worth your time. In all honesty, Craig has done so much for me as someone who guides and inspires me to hone whatever potential I have that I don’t think there is anything I can ever say or do to properly express my gratitude. Comparing who (more properly what) I was to who I am now, I can humbly admit that I have come a very long way towards living a better life, and I thank Craig for inspiring me to question and challenge myself. A lot of people who don’t like Craig will write this evaluation off immediately, but I guarantee you that if you take his class(es) seriously, you will find that what he can teach you if you’re only willing to learn will be worth more than the entire rest of your education, and that is no exaggeration. If you’ve ever read a book by a professor, or watched one interviewed on the History channel, etc, and wondered what it would be like to have someone that brilliant as your professor… Well, not only will Craig teach you everything you need to know, but he will gladly sacrifice his personal time to teach or help you with whatever it is you need, so long as you’re sincere. If you’ll be a real student, he’ll be a real teacher; something very hard to come by in this day and age.

Craig has a love for teaching that I haven't seen reflected in any of the other professors at uconn. There are kids who have taken 4,5 probably even 6 of his classes. There is a reason why. He makes you want to learn. He makes you want to strive for an A. Even if you get a B, you know it will be the hardest grade you worked for throughout your college career. Not only that but you will retain the knowledge far after the class is over. UConn will be sorry to see Craig leave.

Other Comments:
I took his Contemporary International Politics course last fall and walked away from it with an easily earned B (there is ALOT of reading though) and mixed feelings about him. There is a quiz every week in that class and you have to have read at least 2 New York Times articles in the World Section before taking it in order to answer a recurring question on them. Also, regarding the quizzes, you need to take good notes from the readings in order to do well. His exams are essay questions which are kind of tough for people who don’t know how to write bullshit answers (I do, and if you do too, their not that bad). But what to say about Craig Albert? First the positive: Craig is a good and well-intentioned person (but if you think about it, most people are). He is also very enthusiastic and can be, AT TIMES, mildly-to-fairly funny. And lastly, he would bend over backwards to help his students, which is a big, big plus. The negative: Craig is a 15-year-old boy posing as an adult professor (that's actually true). He has a high-school level sense of humor for the most part, and a downright infantile need to be well-liked/respected, which I leave to Freudian psychoanalysts to explain. Furthermore, Craig is not that knowledgeable about politics, despite what other people who have posted say. In fact, the most disturbing thing about Craig to me anyway is that I noticed him on more than a few occasions MAKING UP FACTS in class in order to win arguments (my personal favorites, PARAPHRASING: "only 3 of the founding fathers were isolationists", and who could forget, "the U.S. has attempted to create democracies in foreign states 17 times and succeeded 3 times" – Absolutely Priceless!). To be fair, the majority of the students in my class liked Craig. Putting the best possible spin on him, I myself would describe Craig Albert as the holy grail of teachers for the "cool to be stupid" generation we're living in.

Craig is not afraid to bring ideology into his lectures. Unfortunately, I disagreed with just about every opinion that he came out with in the class. On many factual points I found him to be just wrong. However, now that I don't have him anymore, I kind of miss his classes. I guess that I also owe him an apology because I shitted on him pretty hard in his evaluation.

Craig has a lot of critics because of his strong personality and opinions BUT he really knows his stuff. I think Craig's a good professor. My main criticisms are that he is a little too confrontational for my liking and that he does his "stand up routine" a little too much. Sure he's a little nuts, a little too conservative for my taste and will destroy arguments he doesn't think are grounded in any logic, but it's good he tries to remove BS arguments from class discussions.

If you think that Craig "makes you think", then you really need to take a long hard look at yourself in the mirror. I honestly think that about 98% of UConn students are pretty bright. The other 2% like Craig Albert. At least his class is easy, but I guess that should be obvious.

He can be the biggest a** sometimes but that is part of his charm. He has a great love of teaching and is one of the most interesting teachers I have every had. It does not matter that he is a grad student or a full professor, it is his teaching skill that counts. Word to the warning though, do the reading and be prepared to speak out in class even if it is to argue with what Craig says. If you just want to skate through, then do not take this class, this is a class for learning.

Craig is no professor, he is a grad student posing as one. He is probably the only grad student with a cult following at UConn, and that is super-lame. Makes you wonder how he won his teaching award (Fraternity + Young Republicans, perhaps?). I can't honestly evaluate Craig as a teacher, because he isn't one. He pretends to be know his stuff, but he doesn't. He pretends to be cool, but he isn't. He pretends to be successful (stupid suits), but he is a loser. He is a big lie. By the way, check out his Facebook profile . . .. what a loser. Do you know what these "books you can't understand" are? Two words: Babysitter's Club.

Craig's class was hard but he made a 3 hour lecture go by fast. His class is a hell of a lot more entertaining than most of my professors. The best part of class is when craig makes fun of other students, but they usually get him back better anyway. I learned shit about political science I didnt even know existed

It's easier to truly evaluate professors once out of college. Craig showed me what realized ambition looks like, and that no goals are out of reach. At the time, I thought he was trying to be cool with everyone and that it was fake. Now I understand that's what politics are about- getting everyone to like you, and to persuade others into thinking like you. He does a good job of it. For me- he can be summed up in one word- ambition. His goal is to extract it from each student. It worked for me (now working full time getting MBA/MSF part-time in Boston).

At first I thought Craig was kind of eccentric, and a little bit arrogant...but after actually showing up to a few of his classes this summer I realized that he is really passionate about what he teaches, and only wants his students to strive to achieve greater things. I might not be the student who gets the highest grade in his class, in fact i'm quite sure i'll be getting the lowest due to my lack of attendence; but I will remember one of our last classes where the class was discussing the meaning of life, and how Craig said it was not solely about being happy, but rather about having virtue, dignity, and honor, and striving for excellence. If I learned anything from this class, its that UCONN is not real life, and that being happy b/c you can party and get wasted every night b/c your "living on your own" is not really being happy at all. So maybe I didn't learn exactly what Craig was trying to teach this past summer session, but at least I've learned that there might just be a lot more to life than I ever could have expected.

What to say about Craig that has not already been said. His occasional tirades in class are hysterical, but pointless. Rumor has it he has a thing for Lance Bass. In all seriousness, he has been extremely influential to many students and his antics only work to bring out the brightest thoughts from his students. He is a quasi clown with an intellectual demeanor. Brokeback

Before I get flamed for my opinion, just for the record I am not a disgruntled student with some pointless axe to grind. As a matter of fact, I got an A in the class I took with him. That said, I found Craig to be pretty immature and working it a bit too hard to win over his students. While I can appreciate the unorthodox approach to win over his students, it kind of worn thin with me his tough guy personna to the point it was pretty transparent he was masking his insecurities. Craig is a bright boy who definately loves what he is doing. But he still has a little growing up to do [which is remarkable, since I am about the same age he is]. I, for one, am convinced that a lot of the positives here are by the same person, which only cheapens the purpose of this website. Let the epithets begin....

Craig does love his job, and I believe he genuinely cares about his subject matter and students. However, I do not think that he is a great instructor. That may change in time, but for now, he seems more concerned with being "cool" and friendly with his students than in being someone a student would really want to learn from and entrust their education to. He prides himself on how challenging he thinks his course is ("this is college, it's supposed to be hard!") but sometimes it is as if he assigns reading assignments not because they are worthwhile, but just to give the appearance of a having challenging syllabus.

I love Craig's class. By far one of the most interesting classes I've ever taken. Also he is one of the few teachers who actualy cares about teaching his students and really getting them to make up their own minds about issues.

This is my second class with Craig and I can truthfully say that even though the class is alot of work, I've learned more this semester in his class than all of my other classes combined. He's a charismatic professor who engages the class in thoughtful, meaningful and hilarious discussions. You have to read and study if you wish to do well in the class but the rewards and the satisfaction of actually knowing whats going on in the world so that you can impress your parents surely outweighs the readings. He's motivational and makes students critically analyze whats going on in the world and themselves. I would reccommend him for anyone who is passionate about Politics on either side of the spectrum. After taking this class, I know my degree will be worth more because Craig embodies everything an educator should strive to be.

I would definitely recommend POLS 211 with Craig for all polisci majors. If you don't like to read, well you're screwed. if you do the reading and take a lot of notes for the quizzes, the class is really easy. Craig is very entertaining and it's rare to see a professor actually love his job. There are a lot of old grumpy polisci professors on campus and Craig is not just another face in the crowd. If you want to actually learn something about the world, take a class with him.

I am a junior in the honors program here at UConn, and have had the opportunity to take a wide array of POLS courses, with a great number of esteemed faculty. That said, I have found myself most inspired, most challenged, and most changed by Craig Albert's classes. I have had the opportunity to take two. His "socratic" method of teaching is rare these days, which is unfortunate. He teaches the class by stimulating you and causing you to truly ponder not just "daily events" in the news, but why they are happening, what is the history behind them, and how are they shaped and perpetuated by a particular world structure. People can say what they like about Craig, but I tell you in all honesty that Craig is probably the most passionate professor I've encountered, he TRULY cares about you and your learning, and the only reason he is "easy" is because he realizes that a grade is a grade, what's really important is that we learn and grow. He's intelligent, provoking, down-to-earth and funny. I would recommend Craig's classes to anyone and everyone, truthfully.

I can honestly say that Craig is one of the best teachers that i have had at UCONN. I admit he expects alot from his students--namely 100+ pages of reading a week but the reading pays off. I am not a pols major but i have learned so much about IR as well as my own personal feelings about issues that my weekly dread of reading the material has been more than worth it. I plan on attending law school in the fall and i feel that the work load as well as the method of teaching Craig uses has prepared me more than any other class. I def recommend Craig to any student who wants to learn alot and is willing to put in the effort. Craig def cares about students doing well and makes class extrememly interesting. I took it as a night class and to keep my interest for 3 hours so that i am not checking the time is something to be said in itself.

There is a lot of reading of the syllabus but most of the students don't do it and it doesn't seem like Craig does either. Most of the time, it a bunch of ill informed folks getting all excited over a topic they don't know too much about. It's like watching a really really bad episode of Crossfire. Craig is really nice and friendly but he is just as bad as the ill informed students.

I find Craig so entertaining that I chose to stay in this class, despite the fact that there is endless reading due every week, which many students appear never to do. The class is easy if you're willing to invest hours of your time, if you're not, you'll do really badly. I find the fact that Craig still has his charming regional accent to be a plus, and all the people calling him an "egomaniac" seem to be unaware of the fact that he's playing a part in order to make you react. That said, my issue with the class is that many of the other students appeared to have never studied Poli Sci/IR in their lives, and they made tons of ill-informed, irritating, cliched comments. That was not Craig's fault, but he loves discussion, so be warned if you don't like listening to morons ramble.

Craig is a good guy, but a little too full of himself. He probably checks this site once a week to make sure that people like him. I think he even posted here a couple of times, seriously (check the post about eating shit). His 211 class requires on average 100+ pages of reading a week and he gives a quize pretty much every class. While his lectures are interesting and funny, he often fails to convey the main points that are necessary to do good in his class. One time he gave us a take home test and then taught us what we were supposed to know for the test after we had already passed it in. Not very cool.

Apparently some of the positive posts here are being written by the same person; either a loser groupie who has nothing better to do with their life, or by Craig himself. Either way, pretty pathetic. How can anyone be so afraid of another's opinion. Anyhow, for a teacher my age, I found Craig trying too hard to win over his students. The subject matter didn't inspire me much either. Perhaps its because I've been "thinking" way before I've taken Craig's class...

This is for that person who made the stupidest comment in the world and its not just referring to Craig. How did he get to this level with his Ghetto -whatever dialact? The way someone talks, or at least their dialact doesn't show how smart or stupid someone is. Personally i think he is one of the smartest, maybe not the most intelligent, but one of the smartest people I have ever come across. I mean, how boring would the class be if he was like all traditional and made us fall asleep like half my other professors do. I'll get to them in a minute. He is really, like no shit, one of the best "educators" I have ever had. U do what u do boy, I know u will read this and come back to class tomorrow with like a grin on your face. Well maybe not tomorrow but try reading it by the end of the semester.I'll admit though, u do pronounce words all wrong!!

Craig is either the worst excuse for an instuctor, or if you're not accustomed to thinking, you'll think that he's the holy grail of teaching. All the raves are WAY overrated, just because this guy "makes you think", makes him great? In any case, his immature attitude undermines his credibility. How did a guy get this far with such a ghetto-wanna be dialect is beyond me, but more power too him. I, for one, would have just appreciated it if I knew beforehand what kind of instructor he was.

Craig knows his stuff. He teaches you to take a logical approach to everything which is very important to life. He promotes metathinking(analyzation of one's own thoughts). Craig tells you straight forward, no B.S. Unfortunately he's an ego maniac but I think he'll mature someday.

I am in NO WAY a Craig groupie. But I am utterly amazed at how any individual could think that he is not a good teacher. Not only does he have "book smarts" but his ability to demonstrate classroom ideas with real life examples is amazing! I refuse to believe that any person with half a brain could honestly believe Craig doesn't know what he's teaching. More than anything though, he DOES teach students how to think for themselves by challenging everything that is said. Whether he agrees with your opinon or not, he argues and makes you question yourself so that you truly understand the material. I didn't do well in his class, but I would recommend it to ANYBODY interested in learing more about IR. Whether or not you like his personality, you will undoubtedly leave his class with more useful information than when you entered.

But now I am a first semester graduate student in a political science program and have to unlearn all the stuff that he taught us because it was flat out wrong. If you want an easy amusing class take his but if you want to really learn takesomeone else like Pressman.

first of all, just because "it doesn't mesh well" doesn't mean it is true. and who cares about "insecurity issues", the class was hard (don't know what class you were taking) and all viewpoints were accepted (although you were probably too closeminded and stubborn to notice). screw the last two reviews.

craig definitely has some issues to deal with. usually those who try to take that badass tough guy stance usually do. that being said he is correct that you will either love him or hate him. most of those who love him fail to mention that his strong points center on just the simple fact that he does what other professors SHOULD be doing, aside from collecting a paycheck.in other words, he engages his students and employs socratic teaching methods. hes doing the job that other professors are too lazy to do.some students might find his persona quite off-puting and undermining his credibility.for someone well read as he claims , it would be nice to see him polish up on his use off grammar. i, for one, found some of his personality not 'controversial'- just plain immature and childish at times. really, if your so educated you certainly do not have to use four letter words to prove your point. bottom line if you like to be challenged, argue, and if you don't find his personality grating, you'll like craig. at the end of the day you could do worse considering how bad some of the teachers are here.

Do not take this class if you can't read extensively and take good notes, as well as write a damn good paper. I have no regrets taking this class (ethnic conflict). I will admit it has been hard as hell and challenging at times but it is worth it. And this is coming from a psychology major.

I've had craig for several classes now, and every class i learn something new or see a different point of view to an issue. he'll bust your balls (bad)if you don't do the work, but its because he wants you to learn. i really don't have anything bad to say about craig- he's the man. i don't want to graduate so i could take more classes with him! i guess after having boring teachers drone on about crap you don't care about, having craig's enthusiasm about the subject really motivates you to work hard. i would recomend this class to anyone, especially polisci majors who are interested in int'l relations. he's the man and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

I think it's absolutely ridiculous that anyone would refer to Craig as a poser or as an individual with "insecurity issues." How the hell is he a poser? I've taken several classes with Craig even though I'm not a Pols major and have learned more in those classes than I have in 4 years of college combined. He cares about his job, he wants students to do well, and HE KNOWS WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT!!! To anyone who has written that he doesn't know what he's lecturing about- perhaps you're simply not intelligent enough to grasp the concepts and materials of the course.

Craig's class can certainly be entertaining, but the guy is so weighted with theories and hypotheticals that he often seems out of touch with reality. As a professor he seems to be very open-minded and interested in alternative view points. However, while he is interested in these, it is quite clear that any opinion other than his own is not quite as valid. Craig is certainly a poser, and a guy with a lot of major insecurity issues that he should really address before he is allowed to affect the minds of undergrads. Nice guy, I'm sure, but yikes!

People like Craig because he is easy, it is as simple as that. He doesn't really know what he is talking about and so many students walk out of his course thinking they have been taught something about politics. They haven't, all they learned is Craig's bizarre notions which have little to do with serious scholarship.

Craig, is the best professor I've ever had. Although he is a little hard to understand, he encourages his students to continue reading because it gets easier. I learned a lot in his class. this guy is by far one of the best teachers you will find at uconn. His classes are by far the most stimulating classes you could take if your at all interested in polical science. Probably never met a teacher who cares more about his students, the subject he teaches and structuring (or lack thereof) a good class than craig. never learned more and had more fun in a class. there is usually a good speach about the meaning of life at the end of the class... any given sunday meets mlk jr. type shit... anyway... its honestly a great topic and great teacher, i highly suggest it.

If had taken a course with Craig as an undergrad, I might have gone to grad school for poli sci (I didn't). He's that good. His class is challenging in terms of the concepts, the reading material, and the final paper, but it's worth it b/c it really makes you think about the world in new and critical ways. If you are willing to do the work and to participate extensively (either in class or in WebCT posts), I would recommend a class with Craig.

Craig is a decent professor. You might not want to take him if you're a poli sci major because he might make you feel stupid in class. He relates to the students nicely..at least if you're an undergrad...nice guy, unlikely candidate to be a professor, whatever works for him though.

While Craig's teaching methods are different than many other professors, he is truly in a class of his own. I have learned more from him than any other professor. His classes are easy if you show up to class and do the readings because he wants students to do well. I think the reason why people feel the need to criticize his "gangsta" personality is because he's unlike any other teacher you'll have in your time at UConn. He had a different upbringing than most of the people in the class, but that makes the class better because he tells stories about growing up in Georgia, and it makes it easy to relate to him on a personal level. I've had Craig for two classes, and honestly I reccommend his classes to all my friends.

Craig is the best professor I have ever had during my time at Uconn. While I am not a pols major, I am very happy that I decided to take a class with him. He not only engages you in discussion but really gets you to think about the subject matter you are learning and apply it to what is going on in the world. I have never been one to enjoy friday classes, but his class was so good that I actually went to all my friday classes. His style of teaching is unique and interesting and if you are looking to actually get something out of your class, I highly recommend taking a class from him. He is also really cute and very intelligent, what else could you ask for in a professor?

As a political science major, I've taken a lot of poli sci courses that deal with theory and/or current events. But its Craig's class that has taught me to actually be able to apply international relations theories to any situation happening in the world. Yes Craig likes to be able to give people A's, but only if you meet his expectations and do the necessary work. If you dont do the reading you arent going to be able to participate in class discussions or do well on the quizzes he gives. Craig challenges his students during class discussions, adopting a devil's advocate stance when necessary to make you delve into a deeper analysis of the situation. I think Craig is a great teacher and I would take another class with him in a heart beat. Everyone, regardless of major, should take one of his classes if the opportunity arises.

Craigs a great professor to take whether you are a political science major or not. If you actually want to learn polisci theory and be able to use it rather than just spit back facts you want to take Craig. People don't only like Craig because he's supposedly easy and give A's its because he teaches you and and cares enough to give you the oppurtunity to do well in his class if you choose to put in the extra work. Besides in class Craig will help you out whenever you need him to outside of class whether its writing recoomendation letters for graduate school or there to answer any questions about the class or other political science classes. He is worth taking but if you are the type of student who does not like to participate or be involved in discussion you may find his style of class not the right fit for you.

Whoever has said that Craig is a bad professor who doesn't know his shit it totally missing the point of his classes. The point is that they aren't lectures and therefore, he's helping everyone be able to conceptualize and not just spit up facts we won't ever remember. In the greater scheme of things, Craig's teaching style is much better than most teachers I have. Obviously, if you don't like learning, don't take Craig's class--because you'll learn more than you will in any other class you take. So what if he's skinny and not "gangsta"--who cares, he's an awesome teacher and thats what should count.

Anyone who's actually watched 106 and park knows that Craig "Silver Bullet" Albert probably harder than anyone on the show..which is sad...for all of us As a teacher, he sometimes lacks overall direction and structure as to diffuse his great intellect to the students. But he also treats students as adults, makes class not so bad to go to, thinks about deeper levels of analysis, forces kids to think on thier own. For those who like digesting and then spewing up the textbook test time, dont take him. Those that might actually want a greater realization of how the international system, U.S foriegn policy whatever works, take him

Craig gets super high marks from most students because he gives everyone an A. His knowledge of IR is superficial at best. He wants to turn his class into a bad episode of 106th and Park. Despite, his ease and popularity he is not a bright man. Furthermore, he is a little too skinny and a little too white to dress like a gangsta'. If I had one to use one work to describe Craig, it is poser. Avoid his class if you are a serious student, especially one with graduate school aspirations.

Not too many other ways to say what a great teacher Craig is after all these other posts. The jackass who made the "don't believe the hype" and the "hit or miss" comments has no clue what he's talking about, so disregard that one. You've gotta read for his class, but it's not textbook crap, it's interesting and you'll learn a lot from it. Class discussions are great, even if you don't always know what some kids are talking about, and Craig's been better than any other teacher I've had at playing devil's advocate and making you understand both sides of any argument. I don't like reading for classes or participating in class discussions, but I've actually done it for this class and it's definitely been worth it. Take as many classes with Craig as you can, especially if you're a poli sci major, you'll be real glad you did.

You can tell from the first day of class that Craig truly loves to teach. He goes out of his way to engage his students in the subjects. He combines factual texts with opinionated books to interest the students and then conducts class by asking thought provoking questions based on what you read. But beyond all the facts that he lectures about, the most important thing he teaches students is how to think. He stresses the importance of treating his class, and college in general, as an opportunity to learn to think for yourself. That's why he teaches conceptualization, not memorization and holds discussions, not strict lectures. Overall, Craig's enthusiastic personality and ability to make his students think and argue beyond even their own personal expectations, is what makes him a great professor.

Expectations are unclear or lofty
Poor sense of humor

Other Comments:
Don't believe all the hype about this professor...If you a girl and you flirt with him, buy his cheap ass a diet soda for class, or you've had him for for more than one class you're likely do fine. His class session can be interesting and he knows him stuff, but his teaching style resembles a highschool substitute who is just trying to be liked. Albert is hit or miss.

Ive taken several classes with craig, hes honestly the most impacting teacher i have ever had in my life. his classes arent about memorizing then spitting definitions back, He actually teaches you to the point that even a year later, youll remember everything u learned in his class. hes amazing and i think anyone that can find an open class with him should sign up.
